Two Iowa State University students, Tim McQuillan and Sean Fritz, were married this morning by the Rev. Mark Stringer of Des Moines’s First Unitarian Church after a ruling from Polk County District Judge Robert Hanson that Iowa’s ban on gay marriage violated the state constitution. In his ruling, Judge Hanson said (among other things) that it violated the due process and equal protection clauses and does nothing to further heterosexual reproduction while punishing same-sex couples. County Attorney John Sarcone has appealed the ruling and obtained a stay to keep any more same-sex couples from obtaining marriage licenses in Des Moines (about 30 couples have done so already).
In local news, I’ll just bet Julaine Appling is rubbing her hands together thanking God that Wisconsin put it in their constitution – it can’t be unconstitutional then, right? Cross out our equal protection clause the way they do with other outdated things in our textbooks.
